It was not only by the unclean air caused by the exhaust of automobiles, the odor of garbage that wasn’t thrown away properly, or the rotting water and trash within storm drains, but it also felt like there was lack of air due to the crowds filling up the sidewalks and most of the people not caring for whose foot they stepped on or who they shoved out of the way. Kindness and manners seemed to be a rare thing among the citizens as only a few times one could hear the words, “Excuse me” or “I’m sorry” coming from those they brushed against in the crowds.
